Greetings,
Shortly after the earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, members of Delta Sigma Theta began making phone calls and sending e-mails to discuss how they could help. When our National President sent out the Call for Action for immediate steps to support Haiti relief efforts, she was expressing what so many members of our organization were already thinking: "If we can help in any way, please let us know what we can do."
Immediately, Deltas all over the country and the world leapt into action, donating money to relief funds and contacting members of the US House of Representatives and Senate, asking them to "...support comprehensive, long term initiatives to empower the people of Haiti through sustainable job creation and infrastructure building."
It is in those weeks that we were reminded of Delta Sigma Theta's mission to be an advocate for our people, and if our efforts in the areas of health care, education and public policy are any indication, Delta Sigma Theta will continue to be an advocate long after public interest has faded and the media have moved on.
Our response to the issues in our service area, and around the world, manifests Delta Sigma Theta's calling to help those less fortunate and offers evidence of what DST does best: give service.
As we begin the 2010 - 2011 sorority year, BAHA is ever mindful of our responsibility to the community to not just provide immediate, short-term relief in times of crisis, but to make lives better as well.
To our family and friends, thank you for your continued support of our chapters efforts to ensure that the work that we do in our neighborhoods is relevant, effective and essential.
To our current members, thank you for what you are doing today and everyday. Thank you for your perseverance, your passion for helping those in need and for continuing to bring hope to the lives of many.
Regards,
Alicia Jones
Chapter President
